Frequently Asked
Questions
Entering this field can often be confusing and
misinformed. Detailed below are a few of the most frequently asked questions
What are Category 1,2, and 3 Students ?
Category
1 entrants
are fully qualified and active gas fitters working within the industry and
seeking to renew their certificates. They have sound gas safety knowledge and
have been actively working within the industry where they have been monitored
by Corgi directly or via their employer. Category 1 students are permitted to
re-enter the ACS Accreditation system automatically on production or their
previous certificates. Engineers have to be re-assessed once every 5 years.
Category
2 Students
are perhaps plumbers or refrigeration engineers with Level 2/3 Plumbing Craft
Certificates that have included an element of gas. They may be students who
have been working supervised on gas and have related experience, or who have
perhaps left the industry for a long period or allowed their assessments to
elapse. They will have no formal gas qualifications
Category
3 Students
are new entrants to the industry, with perhaps DIY trade skills with no formal
qualifications or related experience. Plumbers without qualifications or gas
experience.
What is the actual regulated training procedure, and which course will
get me there fastest ?
We are a
training provider for category 2 and 3 students. Candidates in these categories
have to successfully be assessed and prove their experience in the following
areas, obtaining the relevant craft /safety certificates.
In order to be Gas Safe registered or work for a Gas Safe registered company
the following pre-requisites are required;
Actual
Job Abilities and Experience
Once you
are registered working for a Gas Safe registered employer are you
actually going to have acquired the skills to diagnose service and repair a
vast array of gas appliances and systems in the ‘REAL WORLD’. You will have
needed to have undergone training other than gas safety training on real appliances
in real houses, and attained proper foundation knowledge, theory, and
principles, otherwise passing your safety certificates, and getting registered
is not going to create a successful business and will probably not result in
the success you are seeking. As specialists in
this field we are able to offer over 150 to 200 hrs on job one to one appliance
training, and a tutor supported online training Certificate as part of your Gas
Training Programme to aid your success and offer a great self confidence boost.
Proven
Competency Final Stage- Gas Safe Registration
Once you
have your safety Certificates Gas Safe will contact you regarding registration,
and then annually for renewing your registration.
On your
initial assessment visit there will not be a requirement for the
assessor/inspector to accompany you on a job, this occurs after the first few
months of trading. Your local inspector will however have a series of questions
related to assessing your abilities as a gas fitter. As a new entrant Gas Safe will
be seeking to confirm your levels of experience, and it would vastly assist
your application by sharing a portfolio of concrete and verifiable evidence of you’re
on site abilities and completed jobs to date. If seeking direct employment,
your prospective employer will pose these questions and perhaps even sit you
through a short examination. Your prospective employer will certainly be more
likely to consider your application should you be able to share a professional
prepared portfolio of experience and assessment. It is not enough for this
experience to be gained in a training centre environment. It has to be actual
on site experience with a proven auditable trail. At
Gas Training Consultants we help prepare you for a professional career,
preparing and presenting an unrivalled portfolio covering up to 36 separate gas
assessments on up to 100 appliance jobs within this training programme. All
assessments will have been completed around your training by a fully qualified
Gas Safe registered training consultant and assessor.
Assessment
and Accreditation Stage ACS
You have
to have successfully been assessed by an ACS Accredited Assessor in the
following compulsory element CCN1 (Domestic Core Gas Safety) and be in
possession of a Certificate from the relevant Certifying body (i.e. NIC, BPEC,
CITB, LOGIC etc). At the time of certification Gas Safe will be notified and
you will be added to their database of qualified technicians should you wish to
apply for registration directly or via an employer. This allows you to work on
gas pipe work, but not on any gas appliances. In order to legally work on gas
appliances as a Gas Safe registered engineer you will also need to have been
successfully assessed and Certified in any and all relevant appliances that you
will be working on, for example (gas boilers and central heating systems CEN1,
Water Heaters WAT1, Warm air Units WAU1, Cookers and Hobs CKR1) etc. These
certificates last for 5 years, at which time you will re-enter the
accreditation assessment system as a category 1 student wishing to re-new their
certificates. The assessments take place under strict rulings at an accredited
approved training and assessment centre, and take between 3 and 7 days
depending on whether the student requires additional training prior to taking
the exams and practical assessments. Costs in this vary between £1,000.00 and
£2,500.00 on average for CCN1 and all elements. Gas
Training Consultants will manage your training schedule, entering you for your
ACS Safety Certificates only when you are ready to sit them, and following
intensive training and assessment by our own team of registered consultants.
All of this including certification and your ACS elements are included as part
of this training programme.
Pre
Requisite Requirements to enter the ACS Assessments Stage
In order
to apply for and sit these assessments you will have to prove to the training
centre that you have concrete and auditable proven experience of already
working in the domestic gas field, either under the supervision of a registered
company, engineer, or on your own under your own registration (ie for existing
category 1 engineers). If you are entering the system as a Category 2 or 3 applicants
you will have to provide concrete proof with supported evidence of your on job
experience that shows you to be competent in this area. You will also need to
provide the centre with proof of a recognised gas qualification such as City
and Guilds or BPEC Gas Foundation etc. Gas
Training Consultants will provide intensive one on one training supported by
our fully tutored pre-acs, gas entry and appliance online training support
courses coupled with on-site training to raise your entry category and prepare
you for the tasks ahead and entry to the ACS Assessment stage.
Gas
Qualification Stage
At this
stage the candidate will have to undergo some form of gas NVQ or foundation
certification. Courses run between 2 weeks to 2 years depending on age and
prior experience. Costs vary from £1700.00 to £10,000.00 for this element. Gas Training Consultants will enter you onto a gas training
course in conjunction with the training programme your consultant selects for
you. This is included as part of the training programme.
On Job
Gas Experience
As a
trainee or Cat 2,3 entrant it is unlikely that you will have sufficient if any
proven and auditable job experience in this field. Younger entrants will
normally apply for apprenticeships or to work as trainees within a company. It
is highly unlikely that a mature student could qualify in this category. You may
be able to gain work experience with a friend, or approach an on job Gas Safe
registered Training Company who specialises in this. Costs of Training can vary
from £2,000.00 to £20,000.00 and can depend on your entry experience, whether
you are a complete newcomer or part experienced tradesman/plumber. Gas Training will provide all the necessary field training
and assessment to raise your category entry level in order to qualify on this
programme. This is included as part of this training scheme.

ACS Gas |
| So you’re keen to get qualified as a Gas Safe Engineer are you? Well here are a few words of very good advice.Whether you are entering the field as a new entrant, or an experienced plumber with a level 3 heating and plumbing craft certificate, the single most important part of your training is always the part that is also the most difficult to get. Your ‘ON THE JOB’ gas training. Without sufficient suitable, auditable evidence of ‘you’ working supervised on gas you will not be able to undertake your ACS Assessments needed for Gas Safe Registration. More importantly if your work experience has not been with a company who have been ‘Training’ you on the job, you will be expected to find work with a company on completion of your course who will for a period, 2 years being a good example, continue to train you in the industry in order to build your experience to a level where you can safely go solo. And you thought building the portfolio was difficult! We are a national employer and we wouldn’t employ a new engineer who does not possess sufficient skills, confidence and know how to undertake gas appliance servicing, maintenance, repairs and installation. We are hardly going to pay someone to cost us money. This makes for quite a difficult prospect for many mature students with essential life skills. The next best thing to a work placement is finding a local gas engineer, who will take you out and sign off your portfolio. If you have ever tried that you will know how hard it is. More importantly you are with an engineer who is earning a living, and will hardly stop on a job for several hours just to train you. However, if you are so lucky and can afford to take an extended period of time off work without any income, it is absolutely essential that you are able to find a company who are able and qualified to provide you with the essential field ‘Training’ relevant to the type of ‘Gas Work’ you intend to undertake. The extended period of time required is likely to reflect the fact that you will not necessarily be undertaking much gas work, and that you are relying on what you have learned during your centre training rather than the gas engineer you are out with to implement these skills. Unfortunately it is a true report that indeed a considerable number of field engineers are in as much need of training themselves as those entering the industry. This is our personal experience and that of our trainees.Especially for engineers whose goal is to undertake gas work on a solo basis, running their own business on completion of the course it is essential that you are able to gain references to your abilities or undertake field assessment by a suitably qualified field Assessor, such as a Gas safe inspector. It must also be noted that there is a vast difference in applying your newly learned skills in a training centre than in the field. Especially important is your ability to identify all manner of unsafe situations, and we can assure you that these are extensive and in wide array. Unfortunately we have found that work placements with a registered engineer not only need to be extensive and thorough but that in many cases very little ‘Gas Work’ is achieved and the trainees’ solo abilities are not improved. Most engineers qualifying on training courses in centre at best only retain 30% of what they have studied to a sufficient enough standard to apply these skills without any training in the field. It is our own experience that work placements offer trainees a wealth of experience in corner cutting, bad practice and little if no training. To Sum up this cautionary note: If you You To date It’s a very small price to pay Considering Urgent We are |
